Squid Bubble: A Bold, Playful Display Font for Makers

It started with a candle label. I’d just poured three new lavender-vanilla blends and needed something eye-catching for the front—something that felt handmade but not fussy, joyful but not childish. I opened my font folder, scrolled past the usual suspects, and there it was: Squid Bubble. Not flashy in a loud way—just round, bouncy, confidently uneven, like ink drawn with a slightly wobbly hand. I typed “Lavender & Light,” hit preview, and smiled before I even printed.

Squid Bubble is a display font with real personality—friendly, tactile, and full of quiet confidence. Its letters have soft curves, subtle irregularities, and just enough weight to hold up on physical products without looking stiff or overdesigned. It’s not trying to be elegant—it’s trying to be present. That makes it perfect for makers who want their typography to feel human-made, not algorithmically polished.

I’ve used Squid Bubble across so many real shop materials this season: rustic wedding welcome boards (paired with a light sans serif for names and times), printable planner cover pages (where its rounded forms soften the grid), holiday sticker sheets (it reads cleanly even at 12pt on 1” die-cut circles), and boutique packaging tags (the kind you tie onto ceramic mugs or linen pouches). On matte-finish kraft labels, it gives handmade candles and bath salts an inviting, approachable warmth. On glossy vinyl stickers? It pops—without shouting.

Because Squid Bubble is PUA encoded, all alternate characters, ligatures, and stylistic glyphs load reliably in design apps like Adobe Illustrator, Canva, and Cricut Design Space. That means when you type “&” or a heart symbol, you’re not stuck with the default—you get the playful, custom-drawn version built into the font file. No hunting for SVGs or extra downloads. Just open, type, and go.

It shines best in short, intentional uses: product names, greeting card headlines, invitation titles, shop signage, tote bag slogans, and digital download headers. It’s not meant for body text—and honestly, it shouldn’t be. Let it do what it does best: draw attention, set tone, and add charm in under ten words. For longer blocks—like ingredient lists on candle labels or care instructions on tea towel tags—I pair it with a clean, neutral sans serif (think Montserrat Light or Inter Regular). The contrast feels intentional, not accidental.

Here’s where it really surprised me: readability on cutting machines. I tested Squid Bubble on a Silhouette Cameo 4 for a batch of acrylic keychain blanks. At 24pt with tight letter spacing, the cuts came out crisp—even the inner counters of “e” and “a” held shape beautifully. Same with small foil-stamped gift tags: no filling in, no fuzzy edges. Its generous x-height and open apertures mean it scales down gracefully, especially when printed at 300 DPI or higher.

For seasonal work, it’s become my go-to for farmhouse-style signs (“Gather Here,” “Hello Fall”), printable wall art (“You Are Enough,” handwritten-style but with more rhythm), and birthday party printables (think cupcake toppers and banner letters that don’t compete with confetti). It’s also worked well on cotton tote bags—screen-printed in one color, it holds its shape and character even after multiple washes.

When pairing fonts, I keep it simple. With Squid Bubble’s friendly boldness, a delicate script can feel too fragile, and another heavy display font can overwhelm. Instead, I reach for:

Before using Squid Bubble commercially—whether on physical goods, digital templates, or SVG bundles—I always double-check the license. As a freebie font, it’s generously offered for personal and commercial use, but verifying file inclusion (OTF, TTF, WOFF), multilingual support (basic Latin + common diacritics), and any usage limits keeps things smooth when listing on Etsy or sharing via Gumroad. Most versions include at least one weight (regular), plus alternates and swashes—so look inside the ZIP before assuming it’s barebones.

One unexpected win? Social media mockups. When I prep listing images for new printable collections, Squid Bubble adds instant visual cohesion. It signals “handmade,” “thoughtful,” and “ready to use”—without needing extra graphics or filters. Customers scrolling quickly notice it. They pause. That tiny moment of connection? That’s the quiet power of good typography.

It’s also taught me to trust restraint. I used to think bolder fonts needed more decoration—borders, shadows, outlines. But Squid Bubble doesn’t need that. Its charm lives in its shape, not its effects. So now I often use it plain, centered, on clean white or cream backgrounds—especially for digital downloads like affirmation cards or habit trackers. The simplicity lets the font breathe—and lets the message land.

If you’re choosing fonts for your next batch of labels, cards, or digital printables, try Squid Bubble not as an accent—but as your anchor. Let it introduce your brand voice before a single photo loads. Let it name your candle scent, headline your planner bundle, or welcome guests at your pop-up stall. It won’t solve every design problem—but it will make the ones you do solve feel more like *yours*.

And that’s the real magic of a great display font: it doesn’t just sit on the page. It shows up—with personality, clarity, and a little joyful bounce.
